When it became apparent the Utah Jazz had no desire to keep Derrick Rose following the blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Minnesota Timberwolves quickly emerged as a potential suitor in rumors.
However, per Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, owner Glen Taylor said the T-Wolves currently have no plans to fill their available roster spot.
“If we could find the right person to fit into our team and have some ability to play, get out there on the floor, we are certainly going to look at it. We kept one slot open all year long just in case that possibility occurred. But as of today we don’t have anybody in mind.”
The connection between Rose and Minnesota is obvious, since Tom Thibodeau is the head coach of the Timberwolves. From 2010-11 to 2014-15, he oversaw the Rose-led Chicago Bulls.
Additionally, Minnesota has a thin bench. If an upgrade exists, it would be wise for the front office to pursue him.
But it’s not clear-cut that Rose would provide a major boost. Plus, third-year guard Tyus Jones has made considerable strides in his development and is having the most efficient season of his career. Limiting his minutes is probably unwise.
Rose, who the Jazz have officially waived, may sign a contract before this season ends. As of now, it’s simply unlikely to be Minnesota.
