Report: Seahawks likely to ‘dangle’ Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas in trade talks

Richard Sherman

The offseason has featured plenty of chatter about the futures of Seattle Seahawks teammates Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas. Those talks only figure to ramp up in the coming weeks.

Tony Pauline of draftanalyst.com noted that “there’s a good chance” that the Seahawks will “dangle” either of the Legion of Boom members in trade talks.

“Thomas is more marketable, as he’s in the final year of his contract and is due $10.4 million in 2018 — $2.8 million less than Sherman, who watched his season end with a torn Achilles last November and will turn 30 in March.”

Certainly, neither is a surprise. Thomas has threatened a holdout, while reports have said that Seattle is willing to entertain trade offers for Sherman.

Testing the waters only makes sense for the Seahawks. Seattle’s streak of five consecutive postseason appearances was snapped in 2017. The Seahawks did compete for a playoff spot all year and if they had stayed healthy, likely would have qualified. But the team is now four full seasons from its Super Bowl win, three removed from its last Super Bowl appearance, and has experienced a decline since then.

Given the contracts, ages, and injury histories of both Sherman and Thomas, shopping them on the trade market is certainly logical. If a good offer comes Seattle’s way, expect the Legion of Boom’s breakup to continue.
