Despite placing the franchise tag on star receiver Jarvis Landry, the Miami Dolphins could very well look to trade him this offseason. An early tag means the team simply wanted to keep him off the free agent market. Nothing more.
According to this report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Carolina Panthers are New Orleans Saints are among the teams that could be interested in trading for Landry. That list also includes the Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans.
Carolina makes a ton of sense here. ESPN’s David Newton came out with a separate report Friday noting that the Panthers will look to overhaul their receiving group in the offseason.
“Outside of Devin Funchess, Curtis Samuel and Damiere Byrd, nobody at this position should feel safe as the 2018 roster takes shape,” Newton noted. “There could be an overhaul similar to what the Philadelphia Eagles went through last season en route to the Super Bowl.”
That position has been pretty bad for Newton over the past several seasons. It’s good to see that Carolina will be proactive in adding more talent at receiver for the former league MVP.
The Saints are interesting in that they already have a true No. 1 receiver in Michael Thomas. Adding Landry would create one of the best receiver groups in the league. Pure conjecture here, but running back Mark Ingram could be bait to lure the Dolphins into a trade. Miami is said to be interested in adding a running back, either via the draft or free agency this offseason.
We’re expecting a tsunami of trade activity during the NFL offseason. Landry is obviously among those who have been bandied about the most.
