Report: Mike Mularkey could be fired if Titans lose to Chiefs

Mike Mularkey got the Tennessee Titans to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 with a 9-7 record this year, but he has a hot seat right now nevertheless. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Titans could fire their head coach of two seasons if they lose to the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday.

Rapoport notes that the Titans are not happy with the way Mularkey has failed to develop quarterback Marcus Mariota. The third-year quarterback did take some significant steps back this season, throwing just 13 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Furthermore, despite the team’s winning record, the Titans finished the season minus-22 in point differential, a clear sign of a flawed team.

Per the report, Tennessee has its sights on Mularkey’s replacement already. Though, it must be noted the man they want — Josh McDaniels — is also being pursued by the likes of the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Chicago Bears.

Before the season began, we postulated that Mularkey himself would be the biggest stumbling block to Tennessee finding success. A playoff win or two could certainly flip the script. But to this point that prediction appears to be playing out in front of our eyes.
