Report: Alex Smith for Aqib Talib trade not happening

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith after Week 1 win over Patriots

The upcoming NFL offseason figures to be an interesting one for both Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib. Both Smith and Talib are prime candidates to be traded. The two are currently being talked about in trade rumors together, but according to one report it’s not happening.

It would certainly be interesting if this trade happened. After the two teams met in Week 17, Talib was so impressed by Patrick Mahomes that he predicted Mahomes would displace Smith in 2018. It would be ironic if Talib’s prediction was proven true by a trade that featured him.

In reality, though, it’s hard to imagine this specific trade happening. Player for player trades are rare enough in the NFL. One happening between division rivals would be even more uncommon. Additionally, three NFL GMs said at the Senior Bowl that they would not trade for Talib, thinking that he’ll ultimately be released.

On top of that, the quarterback hungry Cleveland Browns are said to be interested in Smith. It’s tough to predict exactly what Cleveland would offer Kansas City. But given how many draft picks the Browns have for 2018 (12, including five in the first two rounds), they can probably put a pretty enticing package together for the Chiefs. Should that happen, it would likely rule out a lot of other teams.
