Former 49ers’ QB wants team to give Jimmy Garoppolo blank check

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia is a fan of the team’s current signal caller, Jimmy Garoppolo. He previously suggested that the team sign Garoppolo to a five-year deal. Now, in light of Alex Smith’s recent trade to the Washington Redskins (and subsequent extension), Garcia has upped his opinion.

Speaking on 95.7’s “The Greg Papa Show,” Garcia made it known that no price is too high for Garoppolo.

“I think you give him the open checkbook and you tell him, ‘Write your check, man,’” Garcia said, as transcribed by Karl Buscheck of 957thegame.com. “I think he’s definitely a guy that you can build on from now moving forward the next five, six, seven years. … He’s young in his career. In five games, he was more than impressive. … I don’t know if there’s another quarterback — and I’m talking about all quarterbacks in the National Football League — that could have come in in that situation with five games remaining and been any more impressive than Jimmy Garoppolo.”

Certainly, no quarterback could have won more games. The 49ers were 5-0 in Garoppolo’s starts. That stat is especially relevant when remembering that San Francisco was 1-10 previously. Garoppolo led the 49ers to a perfect 5-0 record, which included wins over playoff teams like the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Rams.

In those five starts (plus one brief relief appearance), Garoppolo completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,560 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
