Report: Chiefs trade Alex Smith to the Redskins

That escalated about as quickly as possible.

Even before the Super Bowl ends the 2017 season on Sunday, one of the biggest offseason dominoes around the NFL has apparently fallen.

According to Terez A. Paylor, of The Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have traded Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

“Quarterback Alex Smith has a new home, as sources tell The Star that the Chiefs have reached agreement to trade their veteran starter of the last five seasons to Washington,” Paylor reports.

The trade can’t be made official until March 14th, but it appears that Smith is indeed headed to D.C.

It apparently involves both picks and a player, neither of which are known as of yet.

This is going to have wide-ranging ramifications on the rest of the NFL as the offseason gets going. By acquiring Smith, Washington has made it clear that it’s not going to retain impending free agent Kirk Cousins. That makes the free agency period around the NFL even more interesting.

We will have much more on this breaking story as information trickles out of both Kansas City and Washington.
