Dolphins commit to Ryan Tannehill as starter for next season

Ryan Tannehill

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is coming off two ACL injuries over the past 14 months. He missed the entire 2017 season after suffering the second of the two injuries during the summer.

In his stead, the Dolphins signed Jay Cutler out of retirement. And to put it lightly, that decision didn’t go too swimmingly. Cutler led the Dolphins to a 6-10 record a year after the team posted 10 wins and a surprise playoff appearance.

It now looks like Miami is fully committed to going back to Tannehill. Head coach Adam Gase announced on Wednesday that Tannehill will in fact be the team’s starter in 2018.

This pretty much puts a wrap on Cutler’s one-year tenure in South Beach. It’s also a bold proclamation so early in the offseason.

Tannehill, a first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012, signed a four-year, $77 million extension with the team in 2015. He’s set to earn a base salary of $17.5 million in 2018 with the Dolphins having a dead money hit of just $4.6 million if they decided to release him.

The Texas A&M product has thrown 106 touchdowns compared to 66 interceptions en route to leading the Dolphins to a 37-40 record in 77 career starts.
