Report: FSU finalizing deal to make Willie Taggart its next head coach

Willie Taggart

Since Jimbo Fisher bolted to Texas A&M, it’s been rumored that Oregon head coach Willie Taggart was Florida State’s top target to replace him.

Based on a new report, it seems this is all but inevitable, as FSU is said to be finalizing a deal to bring Taggart to the Seminoles.

Taggart, a former quarterback at Western Kentucky in the 1990s, got his coaching career started at his alma mater in 1999. He coached at South Florida for four seasons before landing the gig at Oregon heading into the 2017 campaign and helped guide the Ducks to a 7-5 record and bowl bid this year. As a head coach at the collegiate level, Taggart has a career record of 47-50, including an 0-1 record in bowl games.

The added bonus of bringing defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt with him to Florida State, as it’s being reported, is immense. The Seminoles have a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball, and Leavitt’s ability to get the most of of that talent would serve the program well.
