Report: FSU expected to offer HC job to Oregon’s Willie Taggart

Willie Taggart

Jimbo Fisher has left Florida State for Texas A&M, and the Seminoles are scrambling to find their next head coach. Could it be Oregon’s Willie Taggart?

According to Andrew Greif of The Oregonian, FSU would be amenable to that idea and are expected to offer him the position. And even though Oregon has recently offered Taggart a new contract extension, it’s not nearly the kind of pay raise the coach could likely land if he is hired by Florida State.

“Last weekend Oregon offered Taggart a contract extension worth more than $20 million over five years. But that would still be far less than what FSU can pay,” wrote Greif. “Fisher earned $5.7 million this season, according to USA Today’s coaching salary database.”

Greif also notes, via Yahoo Sports, that Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente is being considered for the job as well.

Taggart has spent just one years at the helm of the Ducks football program. Despite losing his starting quarterback for a good portion of the year, Taggart definitely did some positive things and guided Oregon to a record of 7-5 and a bowl berth, which is significant considering the program’s 4-8 finish last year under Mark Helfrich.
