The New York Giants won’t fire Ben McAdoo. At least, not until after the season is over, if he’s fired at all.
The team’s owners, John Mara and Steve Tisch, issued a joint statement, via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media Monday, to make it clear they won’t do anything until after the season.
“Ben McAdoo is our head coach and has our support. We are in the midst of an extremely disappointing season. Our performance this year, particularly the past two weeks, is inexcusable and frustrating. While we appreciate that our fans are unhappy with what has occurred, nobody is more upset than we are. Our plan is to do what we have always done, which is to not offer a running commentary on the season. It is our responsibility to determine the reasons for our poor performance and at the end of the year, we will evaluate the 2017 season in its entirety and make a determination on how we move forward.”
A report surfaced on Sunday before the Giants played against the San Francisco 49ers that McAdoo might be fired if the team lost that game. Big Blue not only lost but was embarrassed by the previously winless 49ers, sparking even more chatter that McAdoo might be let go.
However, the Giants have a history of being very conservative about these types of decisions. Furthermore, a strong report came out before Sunday that indicated the team wouldn’t make any decisions until the end of the season.
The Giants are 1-8 on the season, which is already a lost one for Big Blue. The offense has suffered catastrophic injuries to the receiver position, and the defense has been godawful, just one year removed from featuring one of the NFL’s best on that side of the ball.
To say things haven’t gone according to plan would be to tragically underestimate things. There are some huge decisions coming up for the Giants. But based on this statement from the team owners, those decisions won’t be hastily made.
