Baker Mayfield stripped of captaincy, won’t start Saturday as discipline for behavior during Kansas game

Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield was a naughty fellow during Oklahoma’s game last Saturday against Kansas, and now he’s going to pay the price for his bad behavior.

Mayfield was on the sideline after a touchdown and started jawing with a player or players on Kansas’ side, then he grabbed his crotch multiple times and uttered some words too uncouth to repeat here.

After the game, Mayfield issued an apology for his actions.

Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley spoke to the media on Monday to reveal the extent of that discipline. Mayfield won’t be a team captain this upcoming week against West Virginia, and he won’t start.

Mayfield will play, however, so this is more of a symbolic form of discipline than anything substantial.

The heavy favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy this year, Mayfield has passed for 3,816 yards with 34 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He’s added another 240 yards and five touchdowns on the ground and should win the Heisman in a landslide this year, regardless of his behavior.
