The Seattle Seahawks took care of business during the early days of training camp, reportedly signing star safety Kam Chancellor to a three-year, $36 million extension. It’s a deal that is reported to be worth $25 million in guaranteed cash.

Chancellor, 29, was set to become a free agent following the 2017 campaign. His previous deal called for a base salary of just $6.8 million this season.
It was never a foregone conclusion that Chancellor and the Seahawks would come to terms on a new deal. The team exhausted multiple 2017 draft picks on defensive backs, clearly an indication that it was ready to lose Chancellor to free agency.
Meanwhile, at least one teammate had previously called the Seahawks out about not locking Chancellor up prior to Tuesday’s extension (more on that here).
Entering his eighth year with the Seahawks, Chancellor has earned four trips to the Pro Bowl. He’s also coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him put up 81 tackles, eight passes defended and two interceptions.
With a reported average annual salary of $12 million, Chancellor will become the third highest-paid safety in the NFL behind Eric Berry and Tyrann Mathieu.
