Report: Jacoby Brissett not guaranteed a roster spot with Patriots

Jacoby Brissett

In what would be absolutely shocking news, one report from the Boston Herald suggests that New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett is not guaranteed to make the team’s final 53-man roster.

Jeff Howe of the Herald took time to break down the final roster battles taking hold for the defending champs. He had a rather interesting take regarding Brissett’s status with the team.

“There’s been some speculation over Jacoby Brissett’s viability as a third quarterback on the 53-man roster,” Howe reported. “Again, a release doesn’t seem like the probable outcome this weekend from this viewpoint, but the idea has gained enough traction that it’s worth wondering if this is Brissett’s last stand.”

It’s interesting in that New England has made sure to hold on to backup Jimmy Garoppolo, even to the point where the team reportedly turned down a tremendous offer from the Cleveland Browns for him (more on that here).

Brissett, a third-round pick of the Patriots back in 2016, started two games for the team last season. He completed nearly 62 percent of his passes with zero touchdowns and zero picks during that span.

Should the Patriots look to move on from the North Carolina State product, it will likely be via a trade. It would also seem to indicate that the Patriots will keep just two quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster. It’s something to keep an eye on as the Patriots conclude their preseason schedule against the New York Giants on Thursday.
