New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. remains a decisive figure around the football world. A supremely talented player, OBJ has had his share of off-field and on-field concerns throughout his three-year NFL career.
It led to the Giants thinking about actually not picking up the fifth-year option on OBJ’s rookie contract for he 2018 season. This, despite the fact that he’s put up 288 receptions for 4,122 yards and 35 touchdowns over his first three seasons.
None of this seems to be concerning for the star receiver, who now indicates he wants to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.
“It’s like the elephant in the room, and you don’t want to talk about it,” Beckham said (h/t NJ.com). “But I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I’m like, ‘No, I’m going to … there’s no need to not talk about it. IÂ believe that I will be hopefully not just the highest-paid receiver in the league, but the highest paid, period.”
It’s always nice to have goals, but this is a bit absurd.
Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders just signed the richest contract in league history. It calls for $125 million over five seasons. Julio Jones is the highest-paid receiver in the NFL at $71.3 million over five seasons.
Simply put, quarterbacks are at a whole other level when it comes to pay in today’s NFL. And while Beckham Jr. might one day become the highest-paid receiver, there’s little reason to believe his contract will top any of the top-five quarterbacks in the game.
