Mike Williams decries ‘false information’ he’ll need season-ending back surgery

Mike Williams Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers rookie receiver Mike Williams refuted a report that he’s in danger of missing the 2017 season with season-ending back surgery.

The No. 7 overall pick has been out of commission since rookie minicamp. He suffered what was described at that time as mild disc herniation and missed the team’s entire offseason program as a result.

When asked about the report that season-ending back surgery was a possibility, Williams decried that as “false infomation” and said he’s “good.”

It’s unclear if Williams will be healthy enough to practice as the Chargers open up training camp. Ian Rapoport recently reported he underwent a couple of epidural injections to help shrink the disc herniation that has plagued the rookie receiver and that he “is improving.”

As a redshirt junior last year — Williams missed most of the 2015 season with a fracture in his neck — the former Clemson star caught 98 passes for 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Chargers hope he can spark a passing offense that has been bitten hard by the injury bug in recent years. If both he and Keenan Allen can stay healthy, then Philip Rivers will have some special talent to work with.
