The Indianapolis Colts took a preventative measure this offseason by having Andrew Luck undergo surgery on a bum shoulder. It’s an issue that’s plagued Luck over the course of the past two seasons. By undergoing this procedure, the Colts hope that Luck’s injury issues are behind him.
Unfortunately for Indy, Luck is still sidelined with training camp itself starting. Not only that, Luck himself won’t commit to playing Week 1.
“I would say that there’s no reason to freak out,” Luck said Saturday, via NFL.com. “I will be better than I was coming into this coming out. I know that. I don’t know what day it’s going to be, I don’t know what week, I don’t know when it’s going to be but I definitely will be.”
As optimistic as Luck attempted to sound here, we can easily read between the lines. There’s simply no timetable for his return from off-season shoulder surgery.
For the Colts, this can’t be considered good news. The team’s only hope of competing in the AFC South includes Luck being healthy for a full 16-game season. That has not happened over the past two years.
As of right now, Scott Tolzien is Luck’s primary backup. If he were to see action this season, it would likely spell doom for the Colts’ playoff aspirations.
