Tim Tebow has been promoted.
The former NFL quarterback has just one more game with the low-A Columbia Fireflies before heading to St. Lucia in Port St. Lucie, Fla. after being promoted to the St. Lucia Mets, the team’s A-Advanced club, per Teddy Kulmala of The State.
“Tim brought an incredible amount of experience and leadership to our clubhouse,” Fireflies president John Katz said. “His contributions, both on the field and in our community, have made a tremendous impact on our team, the City of Columbia and the entire South Atlantic League. We wish Tim the best as he continues his journey to Citi Field.”
Tebow has been lauded in the past by Fireflies manager Jose Leger as a guy who has the power to play in the big leagues. We already know he has the star power to make an impact, as his presence in Columbia sparked a sharp increase in ticket sales wherever he went.
One wonders how much this move is purely about baseball, however. So far, Tebow’s numbers haven’t been fantastic. He’s been hitting .222 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 63 games for the Fireflies.
