Chiefs release Pro Bowl WR Jeremy Maclin

Jeremy Maclin

The Kansas City Chiefs shocked the football world on Friday by announcing the release of former Pro Bowl wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. It was a move no one really saw coming, especially considering Maclin had remained the team’s clear No. 1 receiver throughout his two years in Kansas City.

ā€œIā€™d like to thank Jeremy for his effort and dedication the past two seasons,ā€ Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said,Ā via the team’s official website. ā€œI have great respect for all players, which makes decisions like these very difficult, but we felt it was in the best interest of our club moving forward to part ways at this time. We wish Jeremy the best as he continues his career.ā€

Maclin, 29, put up the worst performance of his career in 2016 ā€” tallying just 44 receptions for 536 yards and two touchdowns. He was set to count $10 million against the cap in 2017, which has to be considered the primary motivation for Kansas City releasing the veteran.

Maclin was a former first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2009. He’sĀ averaging over 1,000 receiving yards throughout his six-year career in the NFL. Needless to say, there will be interest in the receiver’s services on the open market.

With Maclin now out of the equation, look for youngster Tyreek Hill to take on an even larger role this upcoming season for quarterback Alex Smith and Co.
