Report: Packers CB Sam Shields facing drug charges

After a three-month investigation by police, Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields is facing two drug-related charges stemming from an incident in October.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Shields “was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia — both misdemeanors — nearly three months after a police investigation, according to Wisconsin Circuit Court records.”

The Brown County Drug Task Force was sent to Shields’ residence on October 19 of last year “on suspicions of drug-related activity … based on parcel sent through the U.S. Mail.”

According to the police report, Shields answered the door with a blunt in hand whereupon investigators found “several jars of green plant material that was consistent in appearance with marijuana.”

Shields pleaded not guilty on Friday via his representatives.

“The Packers are aware of the matter involving Sam Shields,” the team said in a statement to ESPN. “We will refrain from making any further comment as it is an ongoing legal matter.”

Green Bay is headed to Dallas this Sunday where they will fight for the right to play in the NFC Championship Game. Shields hasn’t been a part of the team’s run this year, having been placed on IR following a concussion suffered in the first game of the season.

This isn’t the first incident the Packers have faced this week in relation to marijuana, as Geronimo Allison was also charged for possession of marijuana.
