Cleveland weatherman Scott Sabol shaves shaggy beard after Browns win

Cleveland Browns fan and weatherman for WJW FOX8 in Cleveland, Scott Sabol, hadn’t shaved in 109 days after vowing he’d abstain from the razor until the Browns finally won a game.

They did so on Saturday, beating the San Diego Chargers thanks to a couple of missed opportunities by kicker Josh Lambo, winning by the score of 20-17.

As such, Sabol was finally able to shave an extremely shaggy beard.

As he explained on his blog, Scott Sabol’s World of Weather, he’d actually been coming up with excuses to not shave going all the way back to 2011.

“It all started back in 2011.  I was trying to find some excuse not to shave each day before heading to work at WJW FOX 8.  There is an unwritten rule put forth years and years ago that television personalities need to stay cleanly shaven.”

After a couple of extended no-shave runs, he went a while as a normal, clean-shaven weatherman.

That all changed this year when, after his son’s football game his son mentioned it had been a long time since Sabol grew his beard out. Right around the time Robert Griffin III broke a bone in his shoulder, it seemed like a good idea to make the challenge about when the Browns would win. As the season evolved, however, it got serious, even though that isn’t what he intended.

“Most people understood the intention was not a serious one even as the “0-for” beard evolved. I’ve always been a Browns fan since I was a kid. I remember the glory days of the 1980s. I remember the day the Browns left in 1995. I remember walking into old Cleveland Stadium to buy a seat in 1996. My basement is decorated in Cleveland sports memorabilia spanning 30 plus years. This season was as tough for me as it was for all of Cleveland. I can’t imagine how tough this has been on the Browns organization.

“So I want to thank everyone who has followed this since September 8th. Its December 25th. I just finished applying some Beard Oil to my 106 day old growth knowing that the end of the beard is at hand. My family is rejoicing. It’s truly been an exciting ride.”

It’s really a good thing for Sabol, his family, his friends and FOX8 in Cleveland that the Browns did finally win a game this year. Based on the mane he developed in a few months, one can only imagine the growth that would have accumulated if the Browns’ winless streak extended into 2017.
