Report: Bryce Petty to start for the Jets on Sunday

After being limited in practice this week with a sprained MCL, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will not be under center against the Los Angeles Rams.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that former Baylor standout Bryce Petty will get the start.

Petty, who will be the Jets’ third starting quarterback this season, has seen very limited action in the regular season since being selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. In fact, he’s thrown a grand total of two passes. It will be the first start of his young career.

While signs point to the Jets going with Petty due to Fitzpatrick’s injury, this should be seen as an audition for the starting gig. New York heads into Week 10 with a 3-6 record and completely out of the AFC Playoff picture. For his part, Fitzpatrick leads the NFL with 13 interceptions.

If the Jets are attempting to look to the future here, it makes no sense to keep Fitzpatrick under center. Instead, the team needs to see what it has in Petty. That’s the reality of the situation here.
