Eagles WR Josh Huff: ‘What professional athlete don’t have a gun?’

Josh Huff

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Josh Huff finds himself in some hot water following an arrest Tuesday morning on gun possession charges.

Huff was pulled over for speeding, and was found to allegedly have a firearm and marijuana on him at the time of the traffic stop. He was promptly charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, DUI and possessing less than 50 grams of marijuana (more on that here).

Despite the obvious legal issues he’s going to have to deal with here moving forward, Huff himself doesn’t seem to think it’s a big deal he was driving around with a gun.

“I’m a professional athlete,” Huff said, via NJ.com. “What professional athlete don’t have a gun? I have a wife and I have a son at home. My job is to protect them at all cost. To protect myself as well. Even though I know I have security here, I know I have to protect myself as well.”

Well, that’s fine and dandy, but he also has to follow the laws of the land. Huff was in New Jersey at the time of the arrest. The gun itself is licensed in Texas, not Jersey.

While Huff did admit to making a terrible mistake, claiming ignorance here is no defense. We’d also venture a guess that there are a ton of professional athletes out there that don’t own a gun. Those who do likely possess one when it’s legal in the state their actually holding the firearm.

In reality, this is just another example of someone not taking full responsibility for his actions. Huff is still slated to play Sunday against the New York Giants. After that, it’s all about the legal proceedings and what the NFL might do moving forward. Comments like these sure don’t further his cause for leniency on either front.
