Report: C.J. Anderson will be in recovery for ‘months’ after meniscus repair

C.J. Anderson

Denver Broncos starting running back C.J. Anderson won’t be back any time soon after having his meniscus repaired.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Anderson’s recovery time has been “described in months,” rather than weeks. It was a full-blown repair job, rather than just a trim.

Based on this timeline, it’s unlikely Anderson would be available any time during the regular season, and the postseason would be in doubt as well.

This is a huge blow to Denver’s offense, which has already struggled with cohesion and consistency this season under second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian.

It’s also kind of a shocking outcome considering Anderson went off for 107 yards and a touchdown last week against the Houston Texans. He did come off the field briefly after banging up his knee but came back into the game and finished strong.

Now Denver must rely on rookie back Devontae Booker out of Utah. Booker is likely up to the task, having looked great so far in his first NFL campaign.

But the Broncos don’t have hardly any depth at running back right now. Second-year running back Kapri Bibbs is the only other pure running back on the roster, and he’s rushed just four times in his career.

This could be the prime opportunity for Ray Rice to get a chance to finally play. He’s been training hard, hoping for another shot in the wake of his publicized abuse of his wife — something he has worked hard to atone for.

Denver needs the help. But it’s unlikely the Broncos will risk the public backlash of bringing in such a controversial figure. And that’s a shame.
