Josh McCown will start for Browns, Cody Kessler out with concussion

Josh McCown

The Cleveland Browns have officially announced that veteran quarterback Josh McCown will start in Week 8. Head coach Hue Jackson made this known Friday at his news conference, as noted by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

This news solidifies Thursday’s speculation that the Browns expected McCown to under center this week.

McCown replaces rookie quarterback Cody Kessler, who sustained a concussion in Week 7. He has since been ruled out. Rookie Kevin Hogan will be McCown’s backup at home against the New York Jets.

McCown has not seen the field as a starter since Week 2 when he filled in for an injured Robert Griffin III. In that same game, McCown endured a broken collar bone. Kessler had been the Browns’ starter ever since.

As sad as all of this sounds, the Browns’ quarterback woes are a never-ending cycle.

One thing going for McCown is that he has a favorable matchup against the Jets’ 27th-ranked defense. New York has allowed 13 passing touchdowns to date and an average of 282 passing yards per game.

If the Browns were ever primed to post their first win of the year, it could happen in Week 8. Should McCown wind up with an impressive performance, it will be interesting to see what Cleveland’s quarterback plans are moving forward.

Regardless of what will happen in the future, the team’s goal is obviously getting their first win on the books.
