Jerry Jones: Tony Romo will ‘be out of the acute-risk area very soon’

The Dallas Cowboys could see Tony Romo make his return sooner than many anticipated.

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning, Jerry Jones talked about where Romo is in his recovery, noting he will “be out of the acute-risk area very soon.”

ESPN’s Ed Werder related some exciting observations about Romo’s ability to move and throw that meshes well with Jones’ statement.

The Cowboys have been optimistic about a short recovery from the moment the news broke that Romo had a broken bone in his back.

He was not placed on injured reserve because the team couldn’t see how adding any other player would be more valuable than the veteran quarterback (more on that here).

In Romo’s stead, Dak Prescott has led the team to a 1-1 record and has taken excellent care of the football. Through two games, he hasn’t thrown a single interception on 75 attempts, breaking Warren Moon’s record for rookie quarterbacks in this stat.

As well as Prescott has played, Jones is still eager to get Romo back in action as soon as humanly possible.

When asked if Prescott playing well means Romo’s recovery can be stretched out, he balked at the idea.

“Not necessarily, not necessarily,” Jones said, per Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN. “Tony’s situation, when he’s back, will be about whether he’s functional. We’re a better team. We play better.”

Romo is also eager to get back into action as soon as he can. There has been no timetable discussed as of yet, but based on the way things are going, it sure looks like Romo will return far sooner than he would have if he was originally placed on IR.
