Blaine Gabbert is struggling as the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. With that, the calls for Colin Kaepernick to take over are only natural.
If he does get the call, Kaepernick said that he’s ready to play.
Kaepernick said he is ready to play both mentally and physically and is looking forward to that opportunity. #49ers

This isn’t exactly coming out of left field. After the 49ers’ Week 3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, defensive end Michael Bennett said that Kaepernick is a better option for San Francisco than Gabbert.
In many ways, the 2016 season is unfolding in the exact opposite way as 2015 did. In 2015, Kaepernick started the year under center in San Francisco and was eventually benched for Gabbert.
Whether Kaepernick can regain his 2012-2013 form remains to be seen. He hasn’t been a star quarterback in nearly three years. Still, at this point a change is needed. The 49ers have virtually no passing game under Gabbert.
Through three games, Blaine Gabbert has a 38.2 comp. % and 63.1 QB rating on throws of 10+ yards downfield. #49er

Gabbert is clearly not the long term answer in San Francisco.
If nothing else, giving Kaepernick the majority of the 2016 season under Chip Kelly’s system will definitely answer the question of whether or not he is the quarterback of the future.
