Victor Cruz: ‘I’ll be ready to go’ for Giants’ training camp

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz expressed optimism about being able to finally play this summer after missing most of 2014 and the entire 2015 campaign with knee and calf injuries.

Speaking with the New York Daily News, the dynamic receiver was clearly excited for the chance to see the field.

I’ll be ready to go,” Cruz said. “I’ll see what’s up when I meet with the trainers and I step foot in that facility on the first day. But my expectation is to be ready to rock and roll.”

Of course, this is almost exactly what he said last year around the same time when he was attempting to come back from the torn patellar tendon injury that cost him 10 games in 2014.

Unfortunately, he suffered a calf injury early on and never did get healthy enough to get back into the lineup last season. In the end, he underwent another surgery to repair his injured calf.

When healthy, there is no doubt Cruz is among the NFL’s best. He caught 241 passes for 3,626 yards and 23 touchdowns from 2011-13, showing a flair for the dramatic with long touchdown catches of 99, 80 and 70 yards in those three seasons.

If Cruz passes his physical and hits the field for the Giants this year, then Big Blue will have one of the most dangerous pass-catching trios in the NFL.

He would be joining Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie Sterling Shepard. Shepard has already drawn comparisons to OBJ by at least one defensive coach, who could not tell the difference between them.

Taking the field during a regular season game would also be quite an emotional experience for Cruz.

“Might shed a few tears, shed a few laughs,” he said. “It’s all about the process and cherishing this moment because you don’t know if you’re gonna get it again.”

Regardless of any allegiance to your favorite team, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to root for Cruz to make his return this season.
