Jerry Jones: Nick Foles ‘isn’t an option’ for Cowboys

Content with the four quarterbacks he has in training camp, Jerry Jones says Nick Foles is not an option for the Dallas Cowboys in 2016.

Foles isn’t an option,” the Cowboys owner and general manager said, via Jon Machota of SportsDay. “We wouldn’t get him any snaps. We got four that are going to get the snaps.”

The veteran quarterback isn’t exactly a hot commodity right now. The Los Angeles Rams would rather roll the dice with rookie Jared Goff and veteran Case Keenum than let Foles sniff any action after a miserable 2015 campaign.

That said, it is somewhat surprising that Jones remains so committed to diminutive lefty Kellen Moore, who will enter the season as Tony Romo’s backup.

“We know Foles pretty well,” Jones added. “We like Moore.”

Moore didn’t dazzle last year when he was called into action following the failures of Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden. He completed just 58.7 percent of his passes while throwing four touchdowns and six interceptions, earning a pedestrian passer rating of 71.

It’s going to probably be another couple of seasons before rookie Dak Prescott will be ready for NFL action, and the other quarterback on the roster, Jameill Showers, is likely not going to survive final cuts.

Ideally, Dallas won’t need to tap into their backup well at all this year. Tony Romo is healthy again, and the team is committed to running the ball often in order to keep him healthy.

But it remains to be seen if he can stay on the field, regardless, as it’s been a sketchy proposition during the latter portion of his career.

Keep your fingers crossed, Cowboys fans. In the end, you may very well wish Jones viewed Foles as an option, because another lost season is likely on the menu if Romo misses significant time once again.
