Report: Rams looking to extend Jeff Fisher and Les Snead

The Los Angeles Rams may be calling a new city home in 2016. They may have a shiny new quarterback in Jared Goff under center.

But it doesn’t appear the Rams are prepared to move on from those who led the organization during their St. Louis days.

Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News is reporting that extension talks between the organization and head coach Jeff Fisher as well as general manager Les Snead are expected to pick up over the next couple months.

One on hand this makes perfect sense. When the Rams decided to keep both during their relocation to California, it became obvious there was some trust within the organization in these two to improve off what have been four mediocre seasons under their watch.

Once the green light was given to move up to the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft to select Goff, that was only magnified.

Though, giving Fisher and Snead some sort of guarantee beyond the 2016 season can be seen as an odd move.

The Rams boast a 27-36-1 record under Fisher, failing to win more than seven games in any of his four seasons as the team’s head coach. They are coming off their third seven-win campaign during Fisher’s tenure with the organization.

Considering Fisher was the primary force bringing Snead into the mix back in 2012, the two seem to be tied at the hip.

And in reality, Snead hasn’t done a whole heck of a lot to help his head coach with tremendous talent in the draft.

Up until this year’s version of the draft, the Rams have accumulated just two Pro Bowl performers (Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley) in four drafts with Snead at the helm.

Of the 37 selections made by the Rams under Snead, 18 are no longer with the team. Of the 19 that remain with the Rams, just eight are full-time starters.

That’s not necessarily a huge level of success, especially when taking into account the fact that Snead and Co. have now picked in the top 10 for the past four years.

Whether Rams fans in Los Angeles are willing to accept this mediocrity remains to be seen. What we do know is that this team is unlikely to contend for a playoff spot with Goff under center in 2016.

Based on this report, that means very little as it relates to job security for Snead and Fisher.
