Report: Dwight Howard would consider signing with Knicks

Now that the New York Knicks have Derrick Rose, the team seems interested in trying to find another star to bring into the fold with him. One possibility is Rose’s former Chicago Bulls teammate Joakim Noah. Another option is Dwight Howard, who’s said to be interested.

“Sources say Howard would consider signing with the Knicks,” per ESPN’s Ian Begley. “It is unclear at this point if the Knicks are interested in Howard. Signing Howard to a max deal would eat up most of New York’s cap space.”

It’s hard to figure out exactly how this would work.

There are a few things to focus on here. The big one is that Howard tends to attract a lot of drama, and it’s hard to see that going over well with the New York crowd. Remember, Howard has already had one experience in a huge media market when he played a year for the Los Angeles Lakers. That was an epic disaster.

From a pure basketball standpoint, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, either.

In Kristaps Porzingis, the Knicks already have what is pretty close to the ideal center for this era. He’s long enough to protect the paint, but has the shooting range that would help spread the floor on offense.

That’s precisely what Derrick Rose needs if he’s going to regain some of his peak form. Honestly, that’s what Carmelo Anthony needs if he’s going to be a star player on a championship caliber team. The modern NBA is dependent on players who can shoot and space the floor. Howard doesn’t really offer either.

From a drama standpoint, Howard in New York would be gold. Outside of that, though, it’s a terrible fit.
