NFL suspends Sheldon Richardson one game

The NFL’s now infamous holiday weekend news dump is upon us. Minutes after learning the league has suspended Johnny Manziel four games, a more relevant piece of news was leaked to the press.

New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson has been suspended for the team’s Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The suspension stems from an incident back in July of 2015 in which the former first-round pick was popped for driving 143 miles per hour with a 12-year-old child in the car.

Richardson avoided jail time by pleading guilty to resisting arrest, running a red light and speeding. The deal enabled him to avoid child endangerment charges.

This one-game suspension comes at a time when Richardson himself is still facing a four-game ban for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was also suspended four games in 2015 for the same thing.

Richardson, 25, is considered one of the best young defenders in the game. Last season saw him record 35 tackles and five sacks en route to helping the Jets to a surprising 10-win campaign.
