LeBron James on Stephen Curry winning MVP: ‘I think he definitely deserved it’

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James surely likes to talk about the defending champion Golden State Warriors.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the majority of this chatter has included James praising the team that defeated his Cavaliers in the NBA Finals last June.

This didn’t change on Wednesday with the two-time NBA champion indicating that Stephen Curry deserved to win his second consecutive MVP award:

“I think he definitely deserved it,” said James, via the Akron Beacon Journal. “Look at Steph’s numbers. He averaged 30, he led the league in steals, he was 90-50-40 and they won 73 (games). Do you have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award?”

James finished third behind Curry and Kawhi Leonard for the award. Like every other top candidate not named Curry, he didn’t receive a single first-place vote.

While those were some strong words in support of Curry, James surely did make sure to qualify what he thinks the MVP is all about:

“But when you talk about most ‘valuable’ then you can have a different conversation, so, take nothing away from him, he’s definitely deserving of that award, for sure.”

That’s the age-old question here. While Curry was most definitely the best player in the Association, was he the most valuable? Could the Warriors have won 60-plus games without him on the court? Would they be legitimate title contenders?

Being the best doesn’t necessarily make you the most valuable.

Nonetheless, Curry became the first player in NBA history to win the award on a unanimous vote. And in reality, there’s very few that will question him coming away with the hardware for a second consecutive year.

Potentially set to play the Warriors in the Finals once again, it makes sense that James wouldn’t want to give Curry and Co. bulletin board material here.
