Report: LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony accept invites to play in Rio Olympics

Team USA will be anchored by two of the biggest basketball stars on the planet during the 2016 Rio Olympics. Peter Vecsey reports both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have accepted their invites to play for the United States men’s basketball team during the Summer Games.

That Anthony has accepted shouldn’t come as a surprised to anyone who has followed the New York Knicks star forward. He made his desire to play for Team USA known earlier this year and is excited to make history with James as the only duo to appear in four Olympic Games together.

“I’ve been part of USAB since I was 18 years old,” Anthony said, via usab.com. “When you look back at all of it, I have a chance to do something special here. We’re at a point in our career now where we’ve got to start holding onto these moments and enjoying these moments… There’s some history here to be made.”

That James said yes is the real news here. He was undecided about the proposition during the All-Star break, citing concerns about getting enough rest after making it to the NBA Finals five years in a row. If the Cleveland Cavaliers make it to the Finals again this year, then it would be six in a row.

If the dynamic duo does show up in Rio later this year for the international shindig, they will have an opportunity to win their third gold medals, having brought home the bronze in 2004.
