Carmelo Anthony chasing history with LeBron James at 2016 Olympic Games

Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James have a chance to make history during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Should the two of them make the USA Basketball team, they will be the first men in history to compete in four Olympics tournaments.

Anthony expressed his thoughts about potentially achieving this milestone with his long-time Olympics partner, noting they have a unique opportunity in front of them.

“I’ve been part of USAB since I was 18 years old,” Anthony said, via usab.com. “When you look back at all of it, I have a chance to do something special here. We’re at a point in our career now where we’ve got to start holding onto these moments and enjoying these moments… There’s some history here to be made.”

The dynamic duo have run the international gauntlet together since 2004, the year after they entered the NBA as fresh-faced rookies. They have experienced both the highs and lows of living up to and failing expectations, having won gold twice after a miserable 2004 campaign in which Team USA was embarrassed to bring home a bronze medal.

While 2004 was a grave disappointment for every player and coach involved, Anthony credits the experience for helping Team USA get back to prominence on the international stage.

“It changed my life and I think it changed USA Basketball’s life,” Anthony said. “The perception of us at that point in time was not good; we hit rock bottom, so for me to be able to be a part of the rebuilding process and getting it back to where it’s at right now, I’m excited.”

James already has a spot reserved on the roster for 2016, should he chose to participate. He’s been interested in many other ventures in his latter years and doesn’t yet know if he will play. Anthony hasn’t been cleared to play with the team this week as he is still recovering from a knee injury, but his heart is clearly up for the challenge.
