Los Angeles Rams select Jared Goff No. 1 overall in 2016 NFL Draft

The suspense is now over as the Los Angeles Rams have made it official, drafting Cal quarterback Jared Goff with the first overall selection of the 2016 NFL Draft.

This is not surprising at all.

Once the Rams pulled off the trade with the Tennessee Titans to acquire this pick, it was clear that they were going to draft a quarterback. The only question was whether it would be Goff or North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz.

All signs have pointed to Goff being the man during the course of the last week.

The pressure will certainly be on Goff now.

He’ll not only face the typical scrutiny of being a No. 1 pick, but also the face of a franchise in Los Angeles — the second-biggest sports market in the United States.

Furthermore, while Sam Bradford had some bright moments with the team, the Rams haven’t seen much good quarterback play since Kurt Warner from 1999-2001.

Goff certainly has all of the measurables working in his favor. At 6’4, 215 pounds, he’s the right size for a quarterback. In his final year at Cal, Goff completed 64.5 percent of his passes (341-529) for 4,714 yards, 43 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for an NFL passer rating of 109.8.

Goff is the first Cal player to be taken first overall since Steve Bartkowski in 1975. No Golden Bears quarterback has been taken in the first round since Aaron Rodgers in 2005.
