Report: Raiders to sign Bruce Irvin

The Oakland Raiders have made some pretty big noise on the last day of the legal free-agent tampering period around the NFL.

Hours after multiple reports indicated the team is going to sign offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele comes this from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport:

Irvin, 28, was among the top free-agent linebackers in the NFL. A first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks back in 2012, Irvin has recorded 22 sacks in four seasons, including 5.5 this past year.

He’s going to join a defensive front seven that includes star linebacker Khalil Mack as well as the suspended Aldon Smith to form a dynamic trio.

It’s a move that pretty much came out of nowhere. The Atlanta Falcons, among other teams, had been linked to Irvin in the days leading up to Wednesday’s official start of free agency.

It’s also a move that makes Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie one of the early winners of free agency.

Being able to acquire two solid starters is going to go a long way in helping the Raiders build off what was a surprising 2015 campaign.

The reported signing reunites Irvin with current Raiders defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr., who served as Seattle’s linebackers coach for Irvin’s first three seasons in the NFL.
