Starting quarterbacks usually don’t play receive much action in preseason games, often logging one or two series before being pulled for the remainder of the contest.
However, the Washington football team hasn’t quite settled on its No. 1 gunslinger, so Robert Griffin III is expected to remain in the game longer than what’s typical for a preseason opener.
According to Mike Jones of The Washington Post, head coach Jay Gruden said RG3’s involvement may depend on the amount of snaps taken.
“I would think at least a quarter right now, just off the top of my head. But we’ll see. It could be longer. It just depends on how many plays you get. He could have a pitch count and we’ll go from there.”
Last season, RG3 appeared in nine games, tallying 1,694 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. Despite the disappointing performance, the franchise exercised the fifth-year option on Griffin’s contract, which showed Washington is committed to giving him ample opportunity to show he’s worth a starting role.
Reports from training camp suggest Griffin is ready to take control of the battle that also includes Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, but Thursday will help show if the Baylor product has indeed improved over the offseason.
Washington kicks off the 2015 preseason on Aug. 13, at 8 p.m. ET against the Cleveland Browns.
