Reggie Wayne would be a smart addition for New England Patriots

Reggie Wayne is reportedly visiting the New England Patriots on Sunday, and the receiver-needy franchise shouldn’t let him leave without a contract.

Adam Schefter of ESPN revealed Wayne had arrived last night and will be taking a physical on Sunday.

The franchise doesn’t currently have a reliable receiver who can win one-on-one battles on the perimeter. Wayne’s outstanding footwork, route-running and his wealth of experience would be a welcome addition for Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Brandon LaFell is currently on the PUP list with a foot injury and has been since July. Third-year player Chris Harper has been productive in preseason but isn’t going to fare as well against starting talent as he has against the reserves. Brandon Gibson has been in the league since 2009 and has also been a top target this preseason but is a second or third option.

Danny Amendola is phenomenal in space and can get open against almost anybody, but he isn’t a perimeter player.

New England needs that go-to guy on the outside, and Wayne can provide a huge boost to this offense in this capacity. While his wheels may be a bit squeaky at this point in his career, he proved last season with the Indianapolis Colts that they still work just fine.

Provided he passes the physical, the Patriots should certainly sign Wayne to ensure the passing offense can attack all parts of the field in 2015.
