It was reported over the weekend that the Seattle Seahawks offered quarterback Russell Wilson a contract that would pay him $21 million per year.
As the deadline for both sides to agree on a contract inches closer, the two parties still have a gap to fill which seems to boil down to the amount of guaranteed money Wilson is being offered. According to reports, Wilson is being offered under $20 million guaranteed cash up front. On the Seahawks’ side, it is reported that the guarantees are significant but are mainly tied to injury only.
Wilson is reportedly looking for guaranteed money similar to the $30 million cash up front that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton recently secured in his contract extension.
At this time, the Seahawks’ offer remains on the table and Wilson has not turned it down. Wilson and his team report for training camp on Friday at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, Washington.
The underpaid quarterback is set to earn $1.5 million in 2015—the last year of his rookie deal.
