Chicago Bears’ GM Admits They Were Not Targeting a Quarterback in the Draft

The Chicago Bears reportedly made a bid for the Tennessee Titans’ second overall draft pick that included their current quarterback Jay Cutler in the package.

That lasted about a half of a second because the Titans were not at all interested in the 32-year-old Cutler and his gigantic contract.

Despite that last-minute attempt to slough off their quarterback on the Titans in exchange for Mariota, Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace told ESPN that they were never even close to pursuing any other quarterbacks in any round.

It never locked in to where we were on the board. Every time our pick came up we had guys clearly graded better than the quarterbacks that were there. There was just never an opportunity where we were aligned. We’re excited about college free agency and being able to do it that way.

As proven by Pace’s comment, Chicago drafted center Hroniss Grasu rather than selecting quarterback Garrett Grayson. The team also drafted safety Adrian Amos in the fifth round, passing on quarterback Brett Hundely in the process.

Eventually, the team added quarterback Shane Carden out of East Carolina in free agency after the draft.

Pace had claimed recently that the team has decided to move forward with Cutler, so building for the future appears to be the only thing the franchise can do for the time being. The reality of Cutler staying in Chicago should be sinking in, because now that the dust of the draft has settled, there doesn’t seem to be any other options out there.

Cutler may end up facing competition from Jimmy Clausen and David Fales for the starting gig, but it’s highly unlikely he won’t be under center when Week 1 comes calling.
