Report: Wes Welker Plans to Play in 2015

Despite prior reports that Denver Broncos’ wide receiver Wes Welker might be throwing in the towel after 11 seasons in the NFL, opposing reports are surfacing.

Welker indicated to the Denver Post that he’s “just getting ready for 2015.”

When asked about reports that concerned family and friends mentioned his possible retirement, Welker responded…

Never ever came out of my mouth.

Despite Welker’s plans to play, it may be a question of where exactly he will play in 2015. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos are not planning to re-sign the 33-year-old slot receiver.

With the emergence of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and possible contract talks taking place in the attempt to secure wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas, the need to keep Welker around in Denver doesn’t hold much water.

Since suffering two concussions over a three-week period in the 2013, Welker has not been the same player. Posting his worst statistical season in eight years, Welker managed only 49 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns in 2014. A few too many bumps to the head and an aging body that has not done a great job at evading defenders over the last couple of seasons could be a tough sell in the free agent market this spring.
