Yankees rumors: Team close to trading Sonny Gray?

For a while this winter, it sure looked like the New York Yankees were going to hold on to struggling starting Sonny Gray.

Sure he’s been a disaster pitching at Yankee Stadium. But New York isn’t far removed from giving up a pretty penny to the Oakland Athletics for the former All-Star. Now with more depth in the rotation and bullpen, the Yankees are reportedly close to dealing Gray.

It’s not yet known what team the Yankees are looking to deal Gray to. He’s been linked to the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres and his former A’s team in recent months.

Gray, 29, pitched to an 11-9 record with a 4.90 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 30 games (23 starts last season).

Though, his overall numbers suggest that 2019 could be a rebound year in a new city. Gray posted a 6.98/1.90 split at home compared to a 3.17/1.16 split on the road last season.

We’ll obviously have more updates as a potential destination becomes apparent. For now, don’t expect to see Gray back in the pinstripes next season.
