The competition for the starting position at first base for the New York Yankees just became more interesting.
NBC Sports reported 25-year-old Tyler Austin broke his foot while taking batting practice Friday, “smacking a ball off of his foot.” The report mentions it is a small break, but this will keep him in a boot for a few weeks and “away from baseball activities for six weeks.”
He could be ready for Opening Day if the timeline stays true, but you never know.
Across two minor league teams last season, Austin hit a .294/.392/.524 line. When he was promoted to the Yankees, he played in 31 games with five home runs and 20 hits.
As of now, the starting job will go to either veteran Chris Carter who was recently acquired by the Yankees or another young star in the form of Greg Bird.
