Yankees Designate Alfonso Soriano For Assignment

The New York Yankees sent veteran power hitter Alfonso Soriano packing on Sunday afternoon. This move came on the heels of New York acquiring Brandon McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Soriano, who was brought back to the Yankees in a mid-season trade last year, has struggled a great deal in 2014. He is hitting .223 with just six homers and 23 RBI’s on the year.

The 38-year-old outfielder gave New York a lift last season, hitting 17 homers and driving in 50 runs in just 58 games. There promises to be some interest in Soriano’s services should the Yankees be unable to trade him in the next 10 days.

Soriano is a career .270 hitter with 412 homers and 1,159 RBI’s. He made his MLB debut with the Yankees back in 1999.
