The New York Yankees called up right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez to start Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

In corresponding moves, the team transferred infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter to the 60-day injured list and designated right-hander Jacob Barnes for assignment.

Gonzalez (0-1, 6.87 ERA) is making his Yankees debut. He signed with the club on Aug. 30 after appearing in a total of six games (four starts) this season with the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers.

Carpenter has been sidelined since fouling a pitch off his left foot on Aug. 8 against the Seattle Mariners. He batted .305 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs in 47 games in his first season with the Yankees.

Barnes went 3-1 with a 6.10 ERA in 22 relief appearances with the Detroit Tigers before joining New York on Aug. 30. He made his Yankees debut on Saturday and allowed two hits in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out two and hitting one batter in an 8-0 win against Baltimore.
