Who’s been on the phone with Randy Orton over the last few weeks? We may find out on tonight’s WWE SmackDown, but one legend that emerged as an option in recent speculation has been ruled out.

With only a few weeks left before WrestleMania 42, WWE is revving up its storylines to build to the various matches on April 18 and 19. One of the biggest is the expected Night 1 main event between WWE undisputed champion Cody Rhodes and friend turned enemy Randy Orton.

One of the fascinating elements of the feud is a mysterious person Orton has been on the phone with, and their role in unleashing the true “Viper” on Rhodes. There has been a lot of speculation on who that person could be. His father, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Shane McMahon, Vince McMahon, Triple H, and The Rock have all been thrown into the discourse.

The Rock ruled out as Randy Orton mystery caller

However, a new report has ruled out the WWE icon and TKO Group Holdings board member. According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, sources in WWE have denied that The Rock is the person who has become a secret supporter of the 14-time world champion.

The Rock has emerged as an option because of his off-and-on rivalry with Rhodes. Arising again to cause the WWE champion trouble when he least expects it seems to fit the character. However, the Hollywood superstar appearing just once in 2025 — during John Cena’s heel turn — suggests the creative team has chosen to pass on using him because of the scheduling difficulties.

In a post this week, the mystery caller revealed he will be in Orton’s hometown, St. Louis, for tonight’s SmackDown. So fans won’t have to wait much longer to see who the person is.
