Sami Zayn did not want a standard heel turn — and according to a new backstage report, he made that position clear to WWE creative when the conversation came about.

Self-Made Pro revealed during a Self-Made Session that Zayn pushed back internally when the creative direction on SmackDown began moving toward a more conventional heel role, arguing instead for something more layered and unpredictable.

“He didn’t really want to turn heel, and he argued to creative, like, ‘Hey, why don’t we tell a nuanced story here?'” the report stated. “Because he told them, ‘I don’t think I’m a bad guy. I feel like my relationship with the fans is evolving, but I’m not necessarily a bad guy.'”

Zayn has been equally transparent publicly about the approach he has taken to his character. Speaking to the Toronto Sun, he pushed back on the suggestion that he had simply turned heel.

“I’ll disagree with your statement — I fully turned heel. I think I’m trying to play this one a little differently,” Zayn said. He also explained the thinking behind the direction he pitched. “I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box and split the audience a little bit.”

The backstage report aligns almost exactly with those public comments. Rather than WWE flipping him into a clean-cut heel, the approach appears to be deliberately designed to leave audience reactions open-ended — allowing fans to decide for themselves how to feel about what they are watching.
