An update on WWE’s plans for John Cena at Survivor Series 2025 is sure to disappoint many fans.

One of the biggest stories in wrestling this year has been the year-long retirement tour of WWE icon John Cena. Unfortunately, that lengthy journey is down to its final three dates. But on Monday night, it took a surprising turn.

To open up this week’s episode of WWE Raw, “The Unseen 17” checked off another major first in his illustrious career when he defeated reigning Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio to win the title for the first time.

The bout had been rumored in recent months. So with it now off the books, many fans have been hoping Cena would now move to achieving one more career first in his second-to-last appearance. And that is taking part in a super team featuring Cody Rhodes and CM Punk in the War Games match at this year’s Survivor Series. Well, it looks like that is not the plan.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, when it comes to the idea of creating a dream team of top baby faces for War Games, “that’s not happening, because I thought, ‘what a great idea,’ and I was just told ‘not even close.'”

Meltzer added that a match between Mysterio and his father Rey, which has been hinted at a bit in recent months, also is not expected for the event in their hometown, San Diego, CA. Based on what Meltzer is reporting, it seems very possible that a Cena vs. Mysterio rematch could be the plan for the former’s second-to-last WWE match.

The bout between the two on Monday received rave reviews for the setup and the bout itself. As well as how great Mysterio came across in the confrontation.
