Despite his status as one of the company’stop stars—having recently retired legends John Cena and AJ StylesGunther does not yet have a confirmed opponent for WrestleMania 42. And that seems to be because the company is still undecided on who he will face at the event.

According to a new report from WrestleVotes Radio, the internal status for Gunther is currently listed as “undetermined,” with several names being discussed but nothing officially set in stone. The report highlighted three primary candidates to face Gunther at Mania.

Those names are Rey Mysterio, Brock Lesnar, and Oba Femi. The most immediate connection involves the WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, stemming from Gunther’s ongoing path. On the March 2 episode of Monday Night Raw, Gunther defeated Mysterio’s protege, Dragon Lee, in a bout that saw the “Career Killer” go as far as attempting to unmask the young star.

“Undetermined. Not something 100% I’ve heard. Don’t know where they’re going to go. Could easily be Rey Mysterio, especially with this Dragon Lee stuff going on. Maybe they have something else for Gunther. Maybe it’s Gunther and Oba Femi if it’s not Oba and Brock. Can’t see it being Gunther and Brock at this point. We did talk about on WrestleVotes Radio how they made a point to throw Gunther out of the building before Brock Lesnar opened that challenge up,” the report stated.

The possibility of a “dream match” against Brock Lesnar continues to linger, though the landscape has been complicated by Lesnar’s recent open challenge. While Lesnar has been heavily linked to a match against LA Knight, some insiders believe the “juice” remains for a collision with Gunther, especially given their brief interaction during the 2026 Royal Rumble.

Additionally, the meteoric rise of Oba Femi has created a third option, as fans have clamored to see the two powerhouses test each other’s mettle in what many would consider a “heavyweight showcase.”
